90mm Tilt / Shift Photos

July 16th, 2009

Here are some tilt/shift photos that I took last week down in San Fran.  The effect is achieved by the diliberate miss-use of a 90mm tilt/shift lens.

Amazing how much better a tilt-shift lens looks compared to the photoshop tiltshifting hacks. Nice stuff.

6 & 7 are just amazing the way they break my brain.

I’ve never been able to find any explanation with SCIENCE that explains it… What’s different about the way a tilt-shift lens affects focus and field of view compared to just a regular photo with a limited depth of focus (like with a very wide aperture)? Is it just a much narrow depth of focus than you could get with anything else? Or is there something different about the stuff that’s out-of-focus?
